Luna and Lucie, two older monkeys, recently caused a troubling incident involving a baby monkey at their shared enclosure. The baby, young and defenseless, was bitten during an aggressive interaction, resulting in visible injuries and distress. Witnesses reported that the baby monkey had been playing nearby when Luna and Lucie suddenly turned aggressive. Without apparent provocation, they chased and cornered the baby, biting it multiple times.
Zookeepers responded quickly to the commotion. They intervened and separated the monkeys, securing the baby from further harm. The baby monkey sustained bite wounds to its back and legs, which were bleeding and required immediate medical attention. Veterinary staff cleaned and dressed the wounds, administered pain relief, and monitored for signs of infection.
This kind of aggression can occur among monkeys due to dominance issues, stress, or territorial disputes. Luna and Lucie, known to have a strong bond, may have perceived the baby as a threat to their dynamic or territory. Experts are now observing all three monkeys to understand the cause of the attack and determine the best steps moving forward.
