Lora and Lory Often Pull Baby Luna

Comments Off on Lora and Lory Often Pull Baby Luna

Little Baby Luna, still so tiny and new to the world, is caught in the middle of a confusing tug-of-love between her mother, Lora, and her grandmother, Lory. Both adult females care for her deeply—but their way of showing affection is often rough and overwhelming for the delicate infant.

Throughout the day, Luna is passed back and forth between the two. Lora, being the baby’s mother, naturally wants to keep Luna close. But Lory, as the grandmother, is extremely attached and constantly reaches in to take the baby for herself. What starts as gentle holding often turns into pulling and tugging, especially when Luna is clinging to one while the other tries to take over.

The baby frequently cries during these moments, caught between two strong hands pulling in different directions. Caregivers observe closely to ensure no injury occurs, and while the situation doesn’t appear aggressive, it’s clear that Luna becomes stressed by the constant back-and-forth.

This behavior is not uncommon in monkey troops, especially in groups with multiple females who are emotionally bonded to a single baby. While both Lora and Lory love Luna, their lack of coordination and boundaries can make it tough for the baby to rest, nurse peacefully, or feel secure.

Sanctuary staff are gently working to encourage more patient handling by offering distractions, food, and separate cuddle times for each adult. Their goal is to help both mother and grandmother care for Luna without causing distress or unintentional harm.
